Quick Takes: The Value of a Day Off

Dear Homeschool Mama,

As we are quickly approaching the beginning of a new school year, or perhaps you have already begun and are in the early weeks, I wanted to take a minute to remind you of the importance of breaks. It is imperative to plan for and work some break days in now. If we have breaks to look forward to it helps us get through those tough days. It is absolutely OK to end a day and take spontaneous breaks if things go south, however it really does help to just plan them ahead of time. I speak more about this in this post.

The calendar year lends itself nicely to regular breaks. September has Labor Day, Columbus Day in

October, November and December have Thanksgiving and Christmas, January-MLK, February-Presidents Day, March (or April) Easter, and May has Memorial Day. These make for a quick easy way to just schedule in days off. Whichever month (March or April) does not have Easter, just plan a long weekend!!

After years of first taking those breaks, then deciding not to because we just wanted to plow through,

and then ultimately working the them back in, I can tell you time off is extremely worthwhile. When we tried going without them, we inevitably needed to take spontaneous breaks because we were at our wits’ end. Days off are much more pleasant when they are planned and looked forward to. You certainly can choose your breaks any time; it doesn’t need to coincide with the holidays I mentioned. You could also choose a special feast day you'd like to observe and celebrate each month and take those days off. It doesn't really matter how you approach it, but please Mama, do yourself and your children a favor and work them into your year!!

God bless you in your endeavors this year,

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam
